About the Camp
Students from any district are welcome to attend. The only eligibility requirement is completion of the third grade. Students will be placed in one of three levels:

Beginner: No previous experience on selected instrument
Intermediate: 1-3 years experience on selected instrument (or similar ability)
Advanced: 4 or more years experience on selected instrument (or similar ability)

(All lesson and rehearsal placements are at the discretion of the directors of each group.  Students will be placed into the lesson and rehearsal groups where they will be most successful based on ability and amount of experience on their instruments.)

Daily Schedule
Each day, students will receive a 45-minute small group lesson, grouped by instrument and ability, taught by a specialist on that instrument. Students will also participate in a daily 45 minute band rehearsal directed by an instructor experienced in working with that particular age group. In addition, students will participate in two elective courses of their choice.

**Beginner students will be required to enroll in Music Theory I to build a strong foundation to help them become successful on their choice of instruments.  As a result beginner students will only be able to register for one elective course.**

Student Absences
In the event your child will be unable to attend camp on a given day, please contact Allison as soon as possible via text or phone call at 201-738-4687.

ELECTIVE COURSES:
Secondary Instrument (2+ years):
Students who played their primary instrument for at least two years are eligible to sign up to begin a second instrument of their choice.  Classes will be held alongside beginning students.  (Students will need to provide their own instruments for this course.  For help in renting an instrument, contact Allison.)

Jazz Improvisation (2+ years)
Jazz Improvisation is a 45-minute daily non-performance class.  Students who have at least two years experience on an instrument are eligible to sign up for this course (prior jazz experience is not required). Students will learn how to create their own unique music, utilizing various chords and rhythms as well as major, minor, and blues scales.

Jazz Band (2+ years)
Performance-based, 45-minute course which covers many styles of jazz music.  Placement into these groups is based upon the experience listed on the application as well as assessment of the student's jazz playing level, as determined within the first few days of summer school.  Only saxophones (all sizes), trumpets, trombones, baritones/euphoniums, bass, guitar, piano, and drums are eligible for Jazz Band.

Music Theory (0+ years, various levels, required for beginners)
This course is designed to give music students a strong foundation of the terms, structures and function of music along with the basic skills necessary to be successful playing instruments, singing, or composing music.

Songwriting (0+ years)
Students will use their creative ideas to work together and write music.  This course uses fundamental music theory as a basis for students to create their own work.

Guitar (0+ years, various levels)
Students will learn beginning guitar skills such as note reading, chord reading, and strum patterns.  Intermediate and advanced students will continue through more advanced skills, strum patterns, and repertoire.
(Students will need to provide their own instruments for this course.  For help in renting an instrument, contact Allison.)

Piano (0+ years, various levels)
Beginning students will learn basic piano skills such as reading in more than one clef, chord reading, and basic accompaniment patterns.  Intermediate and advanced students will continue through more advanced skills, accompaniments, and repertoire.
